Ever wondered what happens to hermit crabs as they grow? If it wasn’t obvious, shells don’t “grow” with them. They have to find a bigger shell in order to “upgrade”, otherwise the time will come when they will outgrow their shell and be homeless, which means death by exposure to them. So whenever an empty shell washes ashore, hermit crabs form a line and sort themselves from biggest to smallest and trade places.
