Maybe you’ve heard the expression that ‘crazy people don’t even know that they are crazy’. This is likely to be true, in most cases. Could that be that you can be a sociopath and not even know it? When we think of the word ‘sociopath’, the first thing that comes in our minds are people with hallucinations, violence, and all those kind of things you see in mental hospitals. It is true that people suffer from mental instability can display such behavior. Though in our society today, things are not always in black in white — even the psychologists agree on that.
Now, if people don’t know that they’re crazy, how do psychologists do it? Good news, because there’s a way to help determine sociopathy. Here are the signs you might be a sociopath.
LACK OF GUILT
One of the very common sociopath symptoms is that the sociopath does not accept blame for his problems or problems he causes to others. The typical response is to blame everybody else and put himself in the role of victim.
SHALLOW EMOTIONAL RANGE
They think in a shallow way. With this, they think of things that are of little depth. They find no meaning in most of the things they encounter in life, unless it’s about them.
They tend to use people’s ability or resources to get to where they want to be. In a moment, you think that they are the best friend that you will ever get, but once they’ve already gotten what they need from you, they will quickly change.
POOR BEHAVIORAL CONTROL
Sociopaths cannot control themselves. If there is something that they want to do, they will do it.
One of the first things that drew you to this person was the fact that are so charming. They smiled correctly, laughed at your jokes, engaged you and left you with a serious impression. As time wears on, you realize this serves as an ulterior motive, allowing them to get what they want without actually investing any real emotional energy.
EXTREME SENSE OF SELF-WORTH
For a sociopath, their stories are grandiose fabrications, their lives are a huge production and they are the center of it all. Everything about them, their stories, their ego, are big and intense. They believe that their sense of self is entitled to this, and will not be convinced of anything else.
NEEDS STIMULATION DUE TO FREQUENT BOREDOM
They frequently need something to do. Their boredom is something that they don’t like, therefore; they seek to do things that will make them feel good.
They will tell grand ridiculous stories that weave in and out of the truth, complicating their lie to make it sound so fictional, that it has to be true. Lying is in their second nature; they have the uncanny ability to easily lie about anything to you without thinking about it twice.
FAILURE TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR OWN ACTIONS
As far as they are concerned, they are never wrong, and because of that they will never apologize. Their belief that they are perfect and entitled to everything makes them invincible in their minds
Sociopaths are incapable of love; they cannot feel it the way that you or I might experience love. This causes friendships to be very one sided, and a sociopath does not see a friendship as a mutual experience but rather an instrument to be taken advantage of and used.
Sociopaths cheat, swindle, fail, brawl, desert, steel, forge, defraud for surprisingly small stakes even if the risks of being discovered are great. They will even do such things in the absence of any goal whatsoever.
Sociopaths will do everything to get what they want and to be in control. They can be dangerous when they fixed their eyes on something that they want.
For them, it is more about quantity over quality. When you engage with a sociopath, make sure that you are ready for sexual fantasies that might scar you upon hearing about them.
EARLY BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS
People who have early behavior problems can lead to a sociopathic life. Their past experiences as well as their upbringing can make a huge impact on their personality.
LACK OF REALISTIC LONG TERM GOALS
Sociopaths lives in the moment. They don’t think about the long-term, most of them just likes to spend the moment on having fun and making the most that they can from it.
Sociopaths usually act on what they feel. They will not withhold their feelings to anyone, just sudden outbursts. Their actions are usually backed with other intentions that will be favorable for them.
Sociopaths are highly intelligent. They can twist words and use it against you and they can even reason out in the best way possible. And guess what? Most criminals are sociopaths.
The sociopath will be unreliable in trivial and serious matters. It’s impossible to determine when they will be reliable and when not. Hervey Cleckley says this is not even a consistency in inconsistency, but an inconsistency in inconsistency!
